10 Things NEVER to Throw Down the Drain

Clogged Drains St. Louis

Kitchen sink always clogging? Garbage disposal not disposing? Bathroom sink backed up?

Clogged drains are a headache, and aren’t always the easiest to clean out. Fortunately, you can take certain steps to prevent having to deal with unwanted blockage in your home drains.

What’s unsafe to throw down the drain?

Here’s a list of some surprising (and not so surprising) things you should NEVER put down the drain:

  1. Coffee Grounds: Did you know that most plumbers say that nothing causes more blockages than coffee grounds and grease? Try reusing your coffee grounds or composting them.
  2. Eggshells: Even with a garbage disposal, eggshell bits and pieces love to stick to other waster and form clogs.
  3. Grease: Duh. But don’t forget this includes cooked and/or melted fat from meat, bacon, sausage, poultry, skin from boiled poultry, and even gravy!
  4. Flushable cat litter: “Flushable” cat litter is not only bad for the environment by threatening marine species, but also is a mess for septic systems and clogs your drains!
  5. Paper towels: Don’t flush your paper towels! Although biodegradable, their absorbent properties will really clog up any of your pipes.
  6. Oils: Another duh. But make sure that you’re not rinsing your salad dressing, cooking oil, olive oil, condiments and mayonnaise remnants down the drain!
  7. Produce stickers: Unfortunately, the plastic stickers on your fruits and vegetables get washed down the kitchen drain too often. They can get caught in your drain, pipes, screens or filters.
  8. Condoms: Latex will not dissolve. It WILL clog your toilet. Don’t do it.
  9. Car fluids: Keep motor oil, transmission fluids, anti-freeze and other chemicals away from household and storm drains to prevent back ups.
  10. Flushable wipes: Surprise! These are super bad for your drains! They don’t disintegrate like toilet paper and like to combine with other materials, such as congealed grease, and form a super strong blockage in your pipes.
