Custom Cuts Hair Salons had moved into a new location in West County and after two months, their air conditioning unit was out of Freon. We found a couple of leaks, fixed them, and recharged the system with Freon. Three months later the unit was out of Freon again. We found a couple new leaks which we fixed and recharged the system once again.
The following spring the unit was out of Freon once more. We looked at the unit’s history and decided to check some new things on our next service visit. We found that the system was full of acid which was eating pin holes in the copper coils from the inside out. When Freon isn’t installed properly, and water enters the system, over time acid forms eating the unit and eventually destroying it. Robert Hoffmann went to the owner of Custom Cuts and told him that he believed he had inherited the problem from the previous tenant. He brought with him a printout of the service history and explained to him his suspicion that the Freon had been installed improperly by the previous tenant’s service company. The Custom Cuts went to the building owner, showed him the service history, and the building owner bought Custom Cuts a new air conditioning unit. If we hadn’t kept a sophisticated tracking record for our customer, the owner of Custom Cuts would have had to pay for a brand new unit himself.
The best safety for your home and business is to have your furnace checked every year. We have been called to testify as an expert witness in cases where families have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. In almost every case, the owners never had anything done to their furnace. “I haven’t done anything for years and it’s always worked” is what they unfortunately say.
Case Study
There was one case in Crestwood where from lack of maintenance, rust in the furnace had clogged the heat exchanger and flue gases began to build up in the house. These gases are deceiving because they make people feel like they have the flu--they feel nauseous. This couple merely thought they were sick with the flu and had no idea they were slowly being poisoned by carbon monoxide. The condition continued for weeks until they could barely get out of bed. They were taken to the hospital where they died two days later. If they had had their furnace looked at one time... if they had had it looked at every 5 years... they would probably still be alive. Holes in heat exchangers happen over a long time. We check for this condition every time we make a maintenance visit and we catch problems when they are small, before they become a dangerous problem.
