How to repair a washing machine that won’t drain fully?

A washing machine that won't fully drain can be quite frustrating, but fortunately most drain issues are relatively straightforward to diagnose and repair yourself. Follow these comprehensive steps to identify the problem and fix your washer efficiently.

Check the Drain Hose for Blockages or Kinks

One of the most frequent reasons a washer won't drain completely is the drain hose becoming kinked, twisted, or clogged.

  • Unplug the washing machine from the power supply.
  • Move your washer away from the wall to access the drainage hose at the back.
  • Inspect the drain hose visually for kinks that might restrict water flow. Straighten any bends or kinks carefully.
  • If possible, remove the drain hose entirely and examine it internally for blockages. You can sometimes clear blockages using a plumbing snake or by carefully rinsing out debris with warm water.
  • Reattach and securely fasten the drain hose back onto the washer and drainage site.

Inspect the Drain Pump Filter

Most washers today include a drain pump filter that's designed to trap small items and debris, preventing them from entering the drainage pump.

  • Locate the small access door typically situated at the front bottom corner of your machine. Open it gently—ensure you have towels or a shallow pan ready, as some water may drain out.
  • Slowly unscrew and remove the filter. Clean thoroughly by rinsing under warm water, removing any debris, hair, lint, coins, or other small objects.
  • Examine the filter opening carefully for any obstructions that may still lurk inside. Clear as needed.
  • Reinstall the now clean filter securely back into place and close the access door firmly.

Evaluate the Washing Machine Drain Pump

If your washer still won't drain after cleaning the hose and filter, the drain pump itself might be malfunctioning.

  • You'll need access to the drain pump, which might involve partially disassembling the back or bottom panel of your washer (always unplug the washer first).
  • Once accessible, inspect if any objects got stuck within the pump impeller. Remove obstructions carefully.
  • Also, turn the pump impeller manually to verify it rotates freely. If it feels stiff or doesn't spin, the pump might require replacement.
  • Test the drain pump for continuity using a multi-meter to determine its functionality. If no continuity, then replacing the drain pump is usually necessary.

If you're not comfortable performing the above tasks or diagnosing the components yourself, consider hiring a professional. Experienced specialists are available across most cities, including St Louis and Nashville, and can provide reliable, timely service for washer troubleshooting and repairs.

Verify the Washer’s Lid Switch Assembly

A faulty lid switch can also prevent your washer from completing its drainage cycle, as the washer won't spin or drain properly if it senses the lid is open.

  • Unplug your washing machine and locate the lid switch, usually found beneath the lid, near the front or top edges.
  • Inspect it visually or test with a multi-meter for continuity when engaged. If it's damaged or defective, replace the lid switch assembly.

Clear Any Clogs in the Home Plumbing System

Occasionally, the washing machine’s inability to fully drain may originate not within the appliance itself, but in your home's plumbing system.

  • Detach your washer drain hose from the standpipe or laundry sink drain to inspect for visible blockages or backups.
  • Test other nearby fixtures (such as sinks or dishwashers) to see if drainage is an issue elsewhere in your home.
  • If you suspect a blockage in the home’s plumbing, consider using a plumbing snake or enzyme-based drain cleaner to clear obstructions. Severe cases may require professional attention.

After performing these checking and cleaning procedures, reconnect your washing machine and run it through a brief rinse or drain cycle to verify complete drainage. Your washer should now effectively drain, allowing for trouble-free laundry experiences moving forward.
