How to install USB charging outlets in place of standard outlets?

What Are USB Charging Outlets and Why Should You Consider Them?

USB charging outlets integrate standard electrical outlets with built-in USB ports, enabling convenient charging of smartphones, tablets, and other USB-powered devices without the need for individual chargers and adapters. Installing these outlets is an efficient way to modernize your home's electrical system, reduce clutter, and increase usability for your family or business. Many homeowners in cities with bustling lifestyles, like St Louis or dynamic cultural scenes such as Nashville, have already upgraded to USB charging outlets for greater convenience.

Important Safety Considerations Before You Begin

Installing USB charging outlets generally involves handling electrical wiring and should be done safely. If you're uncomfortable working with electricity, don't hesitate to contact a professional electrician. Always remember the following safety precautions when performing electrical work:

  • Always turn off the power at the circuit breaker before you begin, and use a voltage tester to confirm that the outlet isn't energized.
  • Avoid touching bare wires or metal terminals to prevent shock or injury.
  • Ensure the USB charging outlets you buy meet safety standards and codes for your local area.
  • If your home was built before 1980 or has outdated electrical wiring, consult an electrician before beginning the project.

What Tools and Supplies Will You Need?

Gathering your supplies beforehand will help make the installation faster and safer. You should have the following items ready:

  • USB charging outlet (make sure it is rated for your circuit amperage, typically 15 amps for residential circuits).
  • Screwdriver (flathead and Phillips).
  • Voltage tester to check for power at the outlet.
  • Wire strippers or wire cutters.
  • Electrical tape.
  • Needle-nose pliers.
  • A flashlight, helpful if lighting is insufficient at the installation location.

Step-by-Step Installation of USB Charging Outlets

Step One: Shut Off Power

  • Turn off the electrical power from the circuit breaker serving the outlet.
  • Test the outlet with a voltage tester to ensure there's zero voltage before proceeding.

Step Two: Remove Existing Outlet

  • Unscrew and take off the faceplate of your existing outlet.
  • Unscrew and carefully remove the outlet from the wall. Pull it out gently so wires remain intact.
  • Note how the wires are connected (take a photo for clarity).
  • Unscrew or unclip the wires from the original outlet.
  • Be careful to keep the wires separately identified (hot, neutral, ground).

Step Three: Connect the USB Charging Outlet

  • Most USB outlets have clearly marked terminals for hot (black or red), neutral (white), and ground wires (typically green or bare copper).
  • Using your wire cutters or stripper, remove about a half-inch of insulation from each end of the wires if needed, ensuring clean wire ends.
  • Loop the bare copper wire ends clockwise around the correct screw terminals on the new USB outlet, then tighten firmly.
  • Connect black (power) wire to brass screw marked "hot."
  • Connect white (neutral) wire to silver screw.
  • Connect bare or green ground wire to the green grounding screw.
  • Lightly tug each wire to ensure it's securely fastened.

Step Four: Insert the USB Charging Outlet into Wall

  • Carefully tuck wires neatly back inside the electrical box, avoiding pinched or overly strained wires.
  • Firmly secure the outlet to the electrical box by tightening its mounting screws on the top and bottom.
  • Attach the USB outlet faceplate and secure with screws as needed. Avoid overtightening screws to prevent cracks or damage.

Step Five: Restore Power and Test the New Outlet

  • Go back to your breaker panel and switch the circuit breaker back to the "on" position.
  • Return to the outlet and use your voltage tester to verify that the outlet has power restored properly.
  • Plug in a USB-powered device and regular electrical appliance to ensure both functionalities (standard and USB charging) operate correctly.

When to Choose Professional Installation

Although installing USB outlets can be a straightforward DIY upgrade for homeowners, sometimes it's best to trust professionals. Older wiring, unique home configurations, or circuits shared with critical appliances such as refrigerators or HVAC systems may require professional attention. Expert electricians can also ensure the work meets local electrical codes, keeping your home safe while providing peace of mind. Particularly in larger cities such as St Louis or growing metropolitan areas like Nashville, having professional installation provides convenience, efficiency, and ensures compliance with local building codes and regulations.
