How to fix a GFCI outlet that won't reset properly?

Check if the GFCI Outlet Has Power Supply

Before you attempt any repairs, confirm that the GFCI outlet in question is receiving power. If the outlet isn't getting any power from your breaker box, it obviously won't reset. To do this:
  • First, locate and inspect the circuit breaker panel in your home or business.
  • Make sure the circuit breaker for this outlet is switched on.
  • If you find a tripped breaker, reset it by switching it fully off and then back on again. Return to your GFCI outlet and see if you're able to now reset it properly.

Ensure Proper Reset Procedure

GFCI outlets require a specific reset procedure. It's common for users to mistakenly press "Test" instead of "Reset." Follow these simple steps carefully:
  • Press the "TEST" button first. You should hear a clicking sound that indicates the protective function has been tripped properly.
  • Next, firmly press the "RESET" button. It should click into place, restoring power to the outlet.
If the Reset button is not engaging or clicking into place, further troubleshooting is necessary.

Inspect and Unplug All Connected Appliances

Sometimes a GFCI outlet won't reset due to an appliance or electronic device causing an electrical fault or ground-fault condition. In this situation:
  • Completely unplug all appliances from the circuit experiencing this issue.
  • Press the "RESET" button again. If it resets correctly, plug each device back in one by one, checking the GFCI reset operation each time.
  • If the outlet trips immediately after plugging in a particular appliance, the device might have an internal fault and you should discontinue use or have it serviced.

Check for Moisture or Water Intrusion

GFCI outlets are sensitive to moisture intrusion—typically observed in kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor spaces, or garages. Follow these steps carefully:
  • Visually and carefully inspect the outlets for signs of moisture or water exposure.
  • If moisture is identified, dry the area carefully and allow it ample time to thoroughly dry before attempting a reset. Sometimes, simply drying the outlet can resolve resetting problems.
  • Be sure to address water entry issues promptly to keep the area safe.

Examine Wiring for Loose Connections or Damage

Damaged or loose wiring inside the outlet or electrical box can prevent a GFCI outlet from properly resetting:
  • Turn OFF the designated breaker at the service panel before removing the outlet's faceplate.
  • Remove the GFCI outlet carefully from its box, inspect all wiring connections, ensuring they are tight, securely fastened, and without visible damage or burns.
  • If wiring appears damaged or burned, or you're uncertain of correct wiring practices, consult a qualified electrician to safely perform required repairs or replacements.

Reset or Replace Faulty GFCI Outlet

GFCI outlets can fail after continued use, wear and tear, or internal malfunction. If you've checked all the above steps without success, the GFCI outlet itself may be faulty:
  • Replace the GFCI outlet with a new, high-quality, appropriately rated outlet. Make sure it conforms with local electrical codes.
  • If you're uncomfortable performing this task or if local codes require professional assistance, hire a licensed electrician who specializes in electrical repairs in your area.

Whether you're experiencing electrical issues in St Louis or have encountered outlet troubles in the Nashville area, it's important to follow these guidelines and reach out to a qualified electrician if necessary.
