Indoor Air Quality St. Louis One of the most bothersome threats to your indoor air quality is mold in your HVAC system. To prevent mold and other microbiological growth from growing inside your HVAC system, you can keep up with these good habits. Furnaces St. Louis Make sure to clean out the drip pan and condensate line of your furnace regularly. When your furnace produces water as a byproduct of running, it collects into a drip pan. The drip pan needs to be emptied and cleaned regularly or else mold will grow in the pan. Condensate lines transport excess water away from the central air system in your HVAC unit. Sometimes these lines can clog with external debris. Make sure to have these pipes cleared to remove water from the furnace. Otherwise, water will back up and allow mildew to grow. Furnace Maintenance St. Louis While you can clean a drip...
Air Quality St. Louis A clean filter allows air to pass through your HVAC unit freely, without the blower fan working overtime to draw air in through a clogged filter.  By replacing your air filter every 3-6 months, you decrease any strain on your HVAC system and prolong the lifespan of the unit while decreasing overall operating costs. Moreover, by catching dust and debris, a clean air filter keeps your air ducts from filling with dust and allergens, reducing contaminants circulating in your home’s air. Air Filters St. Louis So what types of filters are there? You can choose from these three types: Fiberglass filters: These are most common, do the bare minimum, are cheap and easily replaced. Polyester and pleated filters: These are mid-range filters for people with slight allergies, live in areas with high pollen content or have pets. These generally are better than fiberglass filters for removing pollutants....

Heating accounts for roughly half your utility bill during the peak of winter, so why not try to cut down on costs and increase heating efficiency? Read our 4 tips on how to save money this winter. Heater St. Louis Turn down the water heater. Check the temperature settings on your standard or tankless water heater—most are set at high temperatures that aren’t needed. Turn the temperature down to between 115-120 degrees to save money without noticing any differences in your hot water. Use curtains. Open your blinds and curtains during the day to allow the sun’s rays to naturally help heat your home and close them at night to prevent any air leakage from your windows. Clear heating vents. Make sure that none...

Electric Stove Repair St. Louis If your electric stove won’t heat, check to see if all the burners or just one burner have the problem. If it’s just one burner, turn off the stove and examine the heating coil and its connection. Unplug the coil and look for blisters, bubbles, cracks or other signs of damage. If the coil isn’t damaged, swap out the coil and test it to see if the problem is the coil or the connection. If all your burners aren’t working, you probably have a larger electrical issue, like a blown fuse from an electrical surge. If your stove’s clock isn’t displaying or is connected to your oven and the oven light won’t turn on, then it’s because you don’t have any power to the unit. If your stove won’t adjust its heat, there’s a problem with the infinite switch connected to the dial that regulates power....

Electrical St. Louis If you hear a buzzing sound coming from your circuit breaker, then you most likely have a serious electrical wiring problem. Leaving this problem unresolved is a serious danger. Here are some reasons your breaker may buzz and how to solve it: Normal vibrations: Circuit breakers normally have a slightly audible hum or buzz as energy travels in and out of the panel quickly. However, if the buzzing is louder than usual, you may have a wiring problem. Failure to trip: The circuit breaker functions to cut (or “trip”) power to a circuit when the electrical current gets too high. If your circuit breaker goes bad, it won’t trip and will leave the strong electric current flowing in the wire. This causes the loud buzzing when a high electricity powered device, like an air conditioner, turns on. A bad circuit breaker can lead to overheating and is a...

Plumber St. Louis Don’t let a clog or leak persist in your plumbing this holiday season! The last thing you would want is for your toilets, sinks, or pipes to stop working while you have guests over or to add stress to an already busy time of year. If you want to avoid the stress of calling a plumber in an emergency, then follow these 5 tips to prepare your plumbing system for the holidays. Plumbing St. Louis Avoid chemical drain cleaning products. These chemicals are toxic and can create long-term damage to your pipes, making you spend more money on pipe repair. Don’t throw oil or grease down the drain. Any excess grease or cooking oil from cooking a meal can harden in your drain and be very difficult to remove. The hardened oil will attract other debris or food particles, creating a huge drain clog. Be careful of what...
Ovens St. Louis The Holidays are here! With all the holiday excitement and cheer, also comes all the holiday meals. If you’re cooking or baking this holiday season, then read these 3 tips to prepare your oven for cooking. Regularly clean your oven. To make sure your oven clean and working efficiently, give it a wipe down with a damp cloth once a month and immediately clean up any major spillages. If you bake and use your oven frequently, clean it weekly. Don’t rely on the self-clean cycle as your only method of oven cleaning! You should only use the self-clean once every 3-4 months. Run the self-clean cycle an entire month before your holiday cooking or wait until the holidays are over. It’s very common for ovens to fail because of the self-cleaning cycle! This way you won’t have to worry about your oven breaking the day before Thanksgiving. When...

Plumbing St. Louis Winter can create lots of problems with your home plumbing system. Frozen water in your pipes can destroy your plumbing from the inside out. Prepare for winter’s temperature drop with these preventative measures: Fix all pipe leaks. Check all exposed indoor and outdoor pipes for leaks. Insulate your pipes. Locate any exposed pipes in your attic, garage or crawl spaces and wrap them with plumbing insulation foam. This will protect your pipes and will help keep your home and water warmer in the winter. Drain your evaporative cooler or swamp cooler. Turn off the cooler’s water and power, then drain the water supply line and water out of the cooler. Insulate and heat your pump house. If you have a well, make sure that your pump house piping is well insulated. Also, make sure that your pump house has a properly working heater to keep its temperature...

Heating Efficiency St. Louis Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE, measures the energy efficiency of a gas furnace in percentages. The higher the percentage of AFUE, the greater the efficiency. Every U.S. furnace is at least 78% AFUE because of government regulations. The AFUE number indicates the amount of gas used when your furnace is on. For example, a furnace with 90% AFUE wastes 10% of the gas that it uses to heat your home. Furnace Installation St. Louis Of course, AFUE directly correlates to how much money you spend when heating your home in the winter. When you have a furnace with 90% AFUE, you spend $1 on natural gas but only 90 cents of that dollar heat your home (the rest escapes as exhaust). The higher the AFUE, the less fuel used and the less money you spend on heating. If you’re considering installing a new furnace, factor in...

Heating St. Louis The two main signs that your furnace isn’t working correctly are sudden heat loss and short cycling. Sudden heat loss means that your furnace shuts off unexpectedly and permanently. This can happen anytime, but often occurs at the coldest time of the night so you will wake up to a very cold home and no heat. Washer Repair St. Louis Did you know that not only your dryer has a lint trap? Your washer has one too! If you notice a coat of lint on your clothes coming out of the wash, then its lint filter is probably clogged. A washing machine lint trap can be a cleanable filter or a mesh lint trap. You can find these by checking your owner’s manual for the location of your washer’s lint filter. If you have a high-efficiency washer, then your machine doesn’t have a laundry drain lint trap. Instead, it has a pump filter that removes lint from the wash. Check the pump often to make sure there aren’t any blockages. This will help your washer run correctly and efficiently! Washing Machine Cleaner St. Louis When you find your washing machine’s lint trap, you will probably notice that it has a sticky layer of lint, detergent, and fabric...
